Santa Cruz Aubade
Rose & yellow streamers
band the sky
a cat stands watching,
curious
witness to fresh fire.
Sand & sea
yesterday abandoned. The
homeless
in hoodies, beards, &
worn-thru soles
trudged past bright windows
framing
empty tables, diners too
fragile
to brave the air. The
caroling steam train,
festival lights, clattered
through cold
California, state without
seasons,
already four homeless have
died.
Melon
now the morning sky, the sea
pastel, kissing surf a
pelican glides.
